Grinding is in the mechanical equipment, with the help of the medium (steel balls, steel bars, gravel) and the impact and grinding of the ore itself, the particle size of the ore is further reduced until it is ground into a powder. The choice of grinding equipment has a great influence on the entire beneficiation process and plant construction investment. So the right grinding equipment is crucial to the beneficiation plant.

Ball millrod mill and AG mill are common equipment for grinding operation in mineral processing plants. The difference between ball mill and rod mill has been known before, but what are the similarities and differences between ball mill and AG mill? This article will take you to explore so as to help you choose the appropriate grinding equipment more conveniently.

Similarities between Ball Mill and AG Mill

1. Rotary System

The rotary system of the two mills is basically the same, which is composed of feeding, barrel and discharging departments, and the end cover is cast as a whole.

2. Processing Materials

Both the ball mill and AG mill can process non-metal, ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal and rare metal, and can be divided into dry and wet types to meet the needs of various materials.

Differences between Ball mill and AG Mill

1. Structure

Although the overall structure of autogenous grinding mill and ball mill are similar, but there are differences in details.

  • There are differences in the ratio of the length and width of the barrel between ball mill and AG mill. The large diameter and short length of the barrel of the AG mill reduce the axial segregation of materials, increase the probability of colliding with each other, and improve the production capacity of AG mill and the selectivity of grinding process. While the diameter of the ball mill barrel is less than the length. During the operation, the steel ball and the material in the barrel can rotate together with the barrel and drop, making the material finer.

  • There is a self-return device on the trommel screen of the AG mill, which can directly return the large material to AG mill. However, the trommel screen of the ball mill does not have the self-return device, and it needs to be returned to the feed port of the ball mill by belt or manually.

2. Grinding Media

  • It is well known that ball mills rely on steel balls to complete the grinding operation.

  • While the AG mill does not need steel ball or steel bar for grinding, but only relies on the mineral itself as the medium to realize the self-grinding. The AG mill can reduce the steel consumption and thus reduce the iron impurities of the product. In addition, the friction and collision between the materials can also prevent overgrinding.

3. Grinding Particle Size

  • Due to the relatively high operating costs in grinding stage, most plants often use ball mills for grinding operations after fine crushing. The particle size of the ground material is relatively fine, the feeding particle size is usually in the range of 10-20mm, and the product particle size is usually in the range of 0-0.5mm.

  • The feed particle size of the AG mill is generally below 250mm. When the material is more than 75%, the output is high, the energy consumption is low, and the degree of over grinding is light. In addition, the grinding ratio of the autogenous mill is large, which can be used to process the raw ore from the quarry, as well as the raw material after rough crushing, which can be grinded to finer particle size at one time.

4. Plant Configuration

  • Ball mill can grind the ore to finer particle size, but the range of the input particle size is also higher, and the grinding cost is higher. Therefore, ball mill is usually configured after fine crushing as the main grinding equipment. Among them, the grid ball mill is commonly used in primary grinding, and the overflow ball mill is commonly used in secondary grinding.

  • Autogenous grinding mill has a wide limit on the particle size of the feeding materials and can process coarse-grained minerals, which is equivalent to "crushing + one-stage grinding". But at the same time, the output particle size of the AG mill is relatively coarse. Generally, the larger diameter AG mill will be effective, so it is less used in small and medium-sized dressing plants.

Conclusion

The above is the analysis of the similarities and differences between ball mill and AG mill. In the selection of grinding equipment, various considerations should be taken into account. Suitable grinding equipment should be selected according to different demands to ensure that the grinding equipment matches the technological process and avoids economic losses.
